    I’ve always loved the Tour de France, and then the Vuelta and Giro, and finally got a kickass first bike as a kickass birthday present a few years ago (thanks Laura!). Now I’m racing throughout the summer and manage a local racing team (www.sunnybrookracing.com).

My 1993 Volkswagen Fox with a 16v engine. Running Jenvey direct-to-head Throttle Bodies (no intake manifold), with Megasquirt for fuel engine and spark control, with a Audi V8 exhaust manifold. Handbuilt coilovers, usually on Borbet T 14×8″ wheels. Brazilian market front and rear bumpers, along with H4 headlights and smoked taillights.    

  Lets start in the beginning.. In the UK you can’t drive until you’re 17, but when you’re 16 the law allows you to ride a sub-50cc moped that is restricted to 30mph or less. I was fortunate enough to be able to push this slightly with a sweet white Kawasaki AR50, which I ended up putting some nicer tires on and adding a Micron exhaust. This all ended about a year later when it was stolen.. Moving forwards 14 years (almost doubling my age), a relatively nice Kawasaki AR80 popped up on Craigslist. Unfortunately the bad news is that it’s yoopers.craigslist.org, which means the bike’s in the Upper Peninsula. It’s okay if you don’t know where that is, I didn’t at the time either.
