#5K to CampFest

5,000KM ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA IN A Citi Golf “R ish”

The annual SA CampFest is likely the biggest event held for enthusiasts of Volkswagen cars in Africa, and definitely the biggest in South Africa. Each year I’m very fortunate to fly to Johannesburg for the event, driving a few hours north to the town of Bela Bela. But what happens if myself and some friends turn the other way, and drive the long way there?

And so a plan was formed, buy a nice but basic Volkswagen Citi Golf – the first generaton of the VW Golf, built from 1974 until 1983 in Germany, but produced and available still in South Africa until 2009/2010. And then we’ll try to drive 5,000km in 10 days, on highways, racetracks, mountain passes, and more, meeting people and their cars along the way.

Our destinations will included Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Bloemfontein, Gqeberha, Cape Town, Springbok, Uppington, Vryburg, Mahikeng, Polokwane, Bela Bela, and more.

We have a GPS Tracker with us, and will be updating on various Social Media channels live along the way

So how far have we got so far?

This map updates with live tracking of our progress – about twice an hour.

This Google map shows you the whole route, it is being updated manually to show where we have been.

This is the raw data from our tracker, but it will take you to another web site …..
